As part of the MarriageWell team of coaches, we wanted to share our story of healing in our marriage and how we came to partner with MarriageWell.

Being married for 34 years there were seasons when we shared joy, love, laughter, adventure, hardships, heartache, and sorrow. 

As we settled into our roles as husband and wife and many years in between with three amazing now all adult kids, we hit a roadblock. We were unable to bridge the gap of resolving our conflicts, unable to hear one another, or change our ways that hurt one another. There needed to be more consistency in how to work through our conflicts and better understand how to heal through the process. 

Our communication in dealing with disagreements and the arguments we faced was a constant source of pain. It became difficult to try and heal from one heartbreaking situation to the next.  We felt defeated and began to put into place the steps necessary to separate. 

There wasn’t a handbook along with our marriage certificate and we both carried a lot of baggage through the front door and into the most intimate parts of our relationship.

We believed our marriage was worth one last try before giving up all those years and decided to find  guidance through MarriageWell and found  the tools to restore our relationship.   There was a great deal of effort, work, and forgiveness that took place between us and brought an inner healing to our marriage.  Is it still a journey, yes, but it’s worth what is on the other side and remembering who you fell in love with and why you fell in love with that person when you said, “I do.”

As a testimony, we are now coaches and have partnered with MarriageWell with an office in Palm Desert, CA,  with the hope of walking alongside our community, and other marriages sharing the tools that were given which restored two broken hearts.

That was the decision we made during the darkest year of our marriage. The year was 1994, and we had reached the “fight or flight” crossroads. As difficult as it was, we chose to fight for our marriage. We didn’t know how things would get better but we vowed to keep working at it, get counseling and not give up. Over the next few years, God healed our marriage and gave us hope for our future. Never did we think that 10 years later He would start using us to mentor, counsel, and speak into the lives of other couples like He has. Now 20 years later, God has given us the huge vision for MarriageWell: to give marriages–new, old, and yet to be–the tools to flourish and grow. We aim to honor marriage and be a deep well of resources for couples. Just like any great marriage, the story of MarriageWell has many chapters to come, but our hope and prayer is that they hold many tales of redemption, grace, and love for couples across Ventura County and beyond.
